Probiotics Benefit Everyone’s Oral Health

1. Prevents plaque

All of us have many different kinds of bacteria inside our oral cavities. Among these bacteria, some cause plaque. Oral probiotics can inhibit bad bacteria and prevent plaque.


2. Fights halitosis

Several studies and researches have indicated whether probiotics can help fight halitosis. Halitosis is often caused by the bacteria inside our oral cavities or gut. One study shows that there are 23 people use the antimicrobial mouthwash and then take either a placebo or a supplement with the probiotic streptococcus salivarius for three days. They found that 85% of these people who took the probiotic had major reductions in the amount of bacteria that caused the bad breath.


3. Manages symptoms of gingivitis

A study in 2006 suggested that probiotics can reduce symptoms such as gingivitis. Gingivitis is also known as gum disease. It can cause swollen, tender gums and sensitive teeth. The researchers gave 59 people who have gingivitis a supplement containing either a probiotic bacterium known as Lactobacillus reuteri or a placebo. The participants came back after two weeks. The researchers found that the gingivitis symptoms had improved the most in the group who took the highest dose of probiotics. The people who took probiotics also had less plaque.


4. Decreases inflammation and infection from gum disease

Research suggests that probiotic may help control the inflammation from gum disease. A study in 2007 showed that people who took supplements containing the Lactobacillus brevis had decreased inflammation. Another study was found that drinking probiotic milk daily also decreases oral inflammation.
